Tribute to Sarah Mamalai

(1974 - 2024)

Vale Sarah Mamalai

Sarah Mamalai was a beacon of hope, a relentless advocate for brain cancer awareness, and an extraordinary woman whose legacy continues to inspire. Diagnosed with brain cancer in 2007 and given just three months to live, Sarah defied the odds, living an incredible 17 more years. Every moment of her journey was dedicated to advancing brain cancer research, raising awareness, and supporting others facing the same battle.

Beyond her advocacy, Sarah was a devoted mother to her two sons, Joe and Will, whose heartfelt reflections on her kindness, strength, and unwavering love remind us of the depth of her character and the impact she had on those around her.

Eight years ago, Milena Skepev attended her first Brainstorm for a Cure Gala, an event co-founded by Sarah Mamalai and Amanda Fintan. This became a turning point in Milena’s life. Witnessing Sarah’s resilience and unyielding spirit, and Amanda’s commitment to the cause, profoundly moved Milena, sparking a realisation that brain cancer would become the cause she dedicated herself to.

Amanda, who became Milena’s philanthropic mentor and dear friend, has been a steadfast supporter and advisor to the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation since its inception. Serving as the ABCF’s consumer and donor representative, Amanda has been instrumental in shaping the foundation’s mission and addressing the critical unmet needs of patients and their families.

People often described Sarah as someone who could bring the “ping” in others—a spark of inspiration that could change lives. For Milena, Sarah was exactly that: a source of hope, courage, and motivation.

Three years ago, Milena recognized that more needed to be done to support brain cancer patients and their families. Fueled by Sarah’s legacy and Amanda’s guidance, Milena founded Canberra’s first brain cancer charity, the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation.

Sarah’s courage, compassion, and determination were a key inspiration for the foundation’s creation. Her life and advocacy, along with Amanda’s mentorship, served as a reminder of the urgent need for action and the profound difference that can be made through collective effort.

As we reflect on Sarah’s remarkable journey, we honor her legacy by continuing to advocate for brain cancer research, awareness, and support for those affected.

Thank you, Sarah, for inspiring us to dream bigger and do better. And thank you, Amanda, for guiding and
supporting our journey every step of the way.

With gratitude,

The Australian Brain Cancer Foundation Team
